For the work that deserved to be finished.
A defense fellowship for projects that stalled, never found their place, or were finished but never fielded — and for the people who can carry them further. We take the work in, build it with you, and bring it to where it can matter most.
- Two doors
- Bring a project — or bring yourself.
- Both worlds
- Software, hardware, and where they meet.
- Confidential
- Seen only by the people who need to see it.
- Lawful
- Every project assessed for lawful end use.
Good work rarely fails on merit.
In defense, the distance between a working idea and a fielded system is long, expensive and unforgiving. Much of what is lost along the way is not lost because it was wrong. It is lost because nobody was there to carry it across. The fellowship exists to be that someone.
The funding gap
Between a working prototype and a fielded system, the money runs out first.
No way in
The institutions and integrators who could use the work are hard to reach without a name behind you.
The weight of proof
Testing, documentation and evaluation demand more than a small team can carry alone.
Scattered teams
People move on, and the knowledge leaves with them.
The wrong home
Work born inside a structure that could not carry it any further.
Bring a project. Or bring yourself.
Bring a project
Work that exists — in whatever state it is in.
- StalledIt paused before it could prove itself; it was funding, focus or timing that ran out, not the idea.
- MisplacedStrong work that never found the right home, customer or partner.
- UnfinishedPrototypes, research and subsystems that stopped halfway.
- Completed, never fieldedFinished work that never reached the people who could put it to use.
Bring yourself
Depth that deserves the right problem.
- EngineersSoftware, embedded, RF, electronics, mechanical or systems — people who build things that have to work.
- ResearchersLab, thesis or independent work that deserves a path beyond the paper.
- Small teamsA group that already works well together, looking for the right mission.
- Returning talentPeople who stepped away from the field and want to bring their experience back to something that matters.
Where we are looking.
Software and hardware alike — and above all, the places where the two meet.
Decision support & autonomy
Reasoning over contested, incomplete signals — and autonomy that answers to human authority.
Secure embedded systems
Platforms whose integrity can be verified from the first instruction.
Sensing & signal processing
Turning raw signals at the edge into assessments that can be trusted.
Communications under contest
Links that authenticate everything, reveal little and degrade gracefully.
Cyber-physical security
Protecting the systems where a software failure has physical consequences.
Simulation, test & evaluation
Evidence before the field — how a system behaves before anyone depends on it.
Not in defense? Write to us anyway.
Most of what we take in is defense work. But an exceptional, well-founded idea from another field — finance, security, agriculture, insurance, or somewhere we have not named — is welcome too. Tell us why it matters; it will be read with the same care.
Apply from another sectorVenture backing that stays in the room.
Capital is only one of the things we put behind the work. The rest is the work of building it with you.
Capital
Patient funding sized to the work, not to a fundraising cycle.
Engineering
Hands-on development alongside the original team — software, electronics and systems integration.
R&D depth
The group’s shared reasoning core, tooling and research, so nothing starts from zero.
Maturation
A structured path from prototype toward a tested, documented system that stands up to scrutiny.
Structure
Agreements, IP and — where it helps — company structure, set up so ownership stays clear.
Security discipline
Confidential handling, controlled access and records, from the first conversation on.
Network
Introductions to the institutions, integrators and partners best placed to carry the work forward.
Positioning
A clear case for why the work matters — made where it counts.
From a first note to the field.
- 01
Reach out
A short, unclassified note about the work — or about yourself.
You leave this stage withA reply — and, if there is something to explore, a first conversation. - 02
Confidential assessment
We look at merit, maturity and fit, in confidence and with the right people in the room.
You leave this stage withAn honest read of where the work stands. - 03
A joint plan
We agree how the work moves forward: what we bring, who owns what, and where it is headed.
You leave this stage withA written plan, agreed before any work begins. - 04
Maturation
We build it together under the group’s roof — engineering, testing and documentation, alongside the people who started it.
You leave this stage withA tested, documented system that stands up to scrutiny. - 05
Presentation
We carry the work to the platforms and institutions where it can matter most.
You leave this stage withA real path to the field.
Commitments, not fine print.
Credit stays with the builders
The people who started the work stay part of it. We add to what you built; we do not take it away.
Ownership, in writing
Who owns what is agreed before the work begins — never settled afterwards.
Confidential by default
What you share is seen only by the people who need to see it.
Lawful end use
Every project is assessed for lawful use and handled under the applicable security and export-control regimes.
Human authority
We back autonomy that extends human judgement — never autonomy that removes responsibility.
Patience
Work is backed to mature, not to be flipped.
What we look for.
A hard problem
Something worth solving, where being right actually matters.
Substance over polish
A rough prototype that works counts for more than a perfect deck.
People who will stay
The commitment to carry the work through the unglamorous middle.
A credible path
A plausible route to the field — or, for dual-use work, a credible defense application.
Judged on the work alone.
We make no distinction by language, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, university or background. Every application is read the same way, against the same measures: the work, and the depth behind it. The only limits are the legal and security requirements that apply to defense work itself.
Asked often.
Do I need a company to apply?
No. Individuals, teams, research groups and companies are all welcome.
Does the project need to be finished?
No. Stalled, half-built and finished-but-unfielded work are all in scope. What matters is substance.
I do not have a project. Can I still apply?
Yes. Tell us what you have built and where your depth lies. Some of the strongest fellowships start with a person, not a project.
Who owns the work?
It depends on the work, and it is agreed in writing before anything begins. Credit stays with the people who started it.
The work was done at a former employer or institution. Can I bring it?
Only if the rights are clear, or can be made clear. Describe the situation in general terms and we will think it through with you — without you sharing anything you should not.
Is dual-use or non-defense work in scope?
Dual-use work is, where a defense application is credible. Beyond that, we stay open to exceptional, well-founded ideas from other sectors.
Does my university, background or where I come from matter?
No. We make no distinction by language, religion, ethnicity, gender, orientation, age, university or background. The work is the measure.
Is there a cost to be considered?
No. Being considered for the fellowship costs nothing.
What should I not send?
Classified, export-controlled or third-party proprietary material — through this site or in a first message. When there is something to discuss, we agree an appropriate channel together.
Tell us what you have.
A short, unclassified note is enough to begin. Every application reaches the group directly.
